With the 1299 Superleggera, Ducati takes the world of road Supersport bikes to levels that were unheard of until now: the Superleggera is the first ever factory bike to be equipped with a carbon fibre frame, swingarm, subframe and wheels. The 1299 Superleggera is a gem of engineering, technology and performance. No motorcycle manufacturer has ever produced a factory bike quite like it.

Weighing in some 11kg less than a full-blown world superbike factory race bike, the new Superleggera 1299 has the kind of numbers that are getting close to a MotoGP bike, yet remarkably, the carbon-fibre framed superbike is for sale, for the road, but only in a limited edition of 500 ultra collectable bikes.

When we say carbon-fibre, we mean carbon-fibre everywhere. From the bodywork in carbon to the main chassis, swingarm, subframe and carbon wheels. No wonder it weighs so little. The monocoque frame itself uses a quality control system used in MotoGP and includes high-strength carbon-fibre with a resin system resistant to high temperatures and 7075 aluminium alloy inserts co-laminated into the composite structure.

The motor features sand cast crankcases, titanium con rods, bigger diameter intake out exhaust valves, new cylinder head, high-lift cams, new pistons and an world superbike-style dual exit exhaust with high-mount dual silencers, just like on Chaz Davies’ factory Ducati 1199 Panigale racer. Ducati claim the “engine core” (crankshaft, conrods, pistons, cylinder liner and flywheel) is around 2.4 kg lighter the 1299 Panigale’s set-up, some 21.5% less in weight for that little lot.
